Marmora and Lake – Marmora's fireworks committee hopes to make this year's Canada Day birthday bash the biggest yet.

Committee members Nicholas O'Reilly and Cheryle Leonard told council March 16 that fundraising efforts for the annual Canada Day fireworks show have begun.

"We hope to raise $8,000 this year. Last year we raised $7,000 and we hope to have an even better explosion this year," Leonard said.

The fireworks display will once again be held on Aecon Construction property on the tallest slag hill at the site.

"You can sit in your backyard and enjoy the show," according to a release from the committee.

Other events and activities will be held all day Canada Day at Memorial Park and there will be the annual Canada Day Parade as well.

For more information, call Leonard at 613-472-3412.

Marmora and Lake – Children are invited to grab their Easter baskets and head to Memorial Park on Sunday, April 4, for the 11th annual Easter Egg Hunt.

Marmora and Lake will once again fund an afternoon egg hunt for children under seven. The hunt begins at 12:30 p.m. sharp, and kids can stick around and meet the Easter bunny.

Old newspaper equipment 'Marmora's history'

Marmora and Lake – Council will be moving thousands of archived photos, printing press equipment and newspapers in hopes of preserving a piece of Marmora's history.

Reeve Terry Clemens brought the idea to council's attention as an item of new business at the regular meeting, March 16.

Old equipment from the Marmora Herald newspaper, including a large, heavy printing press and more than a 20,000 photos have been in storage since being donated by a resident.

"It was passed on to the community," Clemens said. "Thanks to (Councillor) Cathie Jones, she got it rescued."

The equipment's current location is not suitable, Clemens said, and it needs to be moved in order to keep it safe from the elements and preserved with a long-term goal of displaying it for public viewing.

"I'd like to ask for council's blessing in having it moved to the old village works garage," he said, adding that the garage currently houses the OPP office and there's room for storage.

"It's a place to keep it where it's safe and dry until we can find it a better home."

Clemens told council the municipality will need help as it will take a boom truck to relocate the printing press.

Council voted unanimously to make arrangements for the equipment to be moved.
